Right up there with Indiana Jones on the adventure movie paragon. This film has it all: Beautiful corset-wearing women, swashbuckling heroes, and possibly the most original character to come out of Hollywood in years. Depp is an instant legend (he should have won best actor) because of this film and his uncanny delivery. The production is fabulous, and Rush is a very compelling villain. There are a few major plot holes (for example, they never tell you where the curse came from, or why the unjust death of that particular pirate would justify such a curse) but otherwise an A+ movie. I don't understand the big deal about this movie. It reaks of Hollywood. 1st, the fall Elizabeth takes at the beginning would have killed her. 2nd, you can't walk on the bottom of the ocean floor without weights. 3rd, Will and Jack can't carry a boat underwater and have the portion from their chest up be free of water. They didn't go a good job at editing either. (show less)

  By far the best in the series. Johnny Depp (Ed Wood) is absolutely perfect for the role and does amazing things with his character. You wouldn’t think a Disney movie based on a theme park ride would spawn a Best Actor nomination, but that is what happened. It his high time Depp wins a well deserved Oscar. Maybe Michael Mann’s upcoming Public Enemies will be that good. Who knows…we’re talking pirates here not gangsters.

  Everyone probably knows the story, caught stealing the Cortez’s gold, a curse was put on the Black Peal and all of its crew. Of course The Black Pearl captained by Oscar winner Geoffrey Rush (Shine). The chase is on and the damsel is in distress. To the rescue is Depp and Orlando Bloom (Lord of the Rings).
  This movie is big summer fun and I can’t see anyone not liking this movie. Great acting by Johnny Depp and Geoffrey Rush, fantastic special effects and nonstop action. If anyone hasn’t seen this, I highly recommend it. Break out the bucket of corn, turn up the surround system and kick back! (show less)

  The good movie that launched the horrible franchise, The Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl is able to introduce some colorful characters, but in hindsight, the film is somewhat stained by what was to come.
  Johnny Depp gives an outstanding, award-worthy performance that will define his career. Geoffrey Rush works well, albeit uncharacteristically bad villain. Yet Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley or, to no one's surprise, pretty bland, but who's expecting them to be good ... (show more)

  Johnny Depp gives an outstanding, award-worthy performance that will define his career. Geoffrey Rush works well, albeit uncharacteristically bad villain. Yet Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley or, to no one's surprise, pretty bland, but who's expecting them to be good actors anyway?
  Director Gore Verbinski does bring the ride to life, and introduces an interesting world. The film does go on a bit too long and does feel in the vein of the usual Jerry Bruckheimer films. The film does have an epic feel, but there is never any sense of fear for the main characters.
  Verbinski and Depp create a world that started out interesting, but PotC does give off an air of self-importance that is unjustified and the following films do bring down much of what the first accomplishes. (show less)
